Introduction to the St. John’s Orphanage fund.

Click me to enlarge Sri Lanka is a country just under India, above the equator. It is also known as Ceylon (where they grow tea). Colombo is the capital and is situated on the west coast. Most of the inhabitants are Singhalese. About 12% are Tamils living mostly on the east coast and in the north. The Tamil Tigers are seeking autonomy and were at war with the democratic government. Many people died as a result of this war, in which there are no winners, but lots of casualties. There are many orphans and widows. Sri Lanka was in a civil war for twenty years until 2002. Many people died, got injured or sick, or left the country. There is a lot of suffering in this country and much help is needed. We estimate about 50,000 orphans. On Christmas Day, 26th of December, 2004, the island was hit hard by a flood as a result of a tremor in the Indian Ocean, next to Indonesia. About 40,000 people died. Many villages were completely wiped away. About one thousand orphans were added.
My name is Joseph Vos. I am from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I lived for 30 years in Israel until 2001. In 1996, two young ladies, whom I taught in church as children, visited Rev. S. Jeyanesan in Batticaloa, on the east coast of Sri Lanka. They saw the work that he does among orphans, deserted children, malnourished children and widows in the area where there are fights. They came to church with stories of children that are desperately poor.

This touched my heart and I started to send them funds on occasions. I visited the orphanages and day-care centers during Easter of 1999. Having a background in accounting, I was able to determine the honesty of the bookkeeping and was especially moved by the horrible conditions which I saw. I felt that it should not be difficult to collect some funds in our countries of affluence and send these poor children some help. I am well aware that often in the poorest areas of the world it is the most difficult to get help, as people on the way will be ready to pocket assistance. The poor then stay poor.

I found a way how 100% of the assistance will reach these children. I want to help them. I hope you want to help them, too. I can help you to help them. If you will send me your contributions, I will make sure that all the money will reach them. Much help is needed.

You can contribute in one of the following ways:
