Our Brief History
| St. John's Mission started in 1989 as a modest organization
in Batticaloa, on the east coast of Sri Lanka. The sponsors envisioned
the need for such an institution to rehabilitate children and women suffering
due to the continuing ethnic violence in our beautiful country. Encouraged
by the success of our mission in helping the destitute and orphans, our
sponsors endorsed our plans to expand the facilities.
Since then, we have built the church (1991-9), the girls' residence (1991-6), the day care center (1993), the kitchen & library (1997), the bell tower (1998) and guest rooms (1999). The boys' residence was built in 1991. The Kiran Widows Empowerment Project commenced in 1996. Currently, we are able to help about 350 widows in our empowerment projects, over 500 childreni in our orphanages and another 1000 children in our day care centers. We thank the Lord for all His blessings and all of our sponsors and supporters. Summing up, we have six orphanages, two vocational training centers, three widows empowerment project, fifteen day care centers and many churches under our care. The "Herman's Girls' Home" was opened officially by Joseph on the 25th of April 2000 through the generous donation of someone who visited this web site and got excited about this project. There are 30 girls in that orphanage. The orphanage was destroyed in the Tsunami from Christmas 2004, but the children were safe. The pastor' in charge of the nearby church lost his wife and child. We are in the process of rebuilding this orphanage. In 2001 we opened a new center called "Grace Care Center" in Trincomalee. We have a girls home for 100 girls, a day care center, a clinic, a vocational training center and we hope soon to open a home for the aged. This center was badly damaged in the Tsunami from Christmas 2004. In 2004 we opened another orphanage close by the "Herman's Girls' Home" called "Samuel's Boys' Home". It was damaged in the Tsunami from Christmas 2004, and it will be restored. Each of our projects is connected to a church set up in close proximity.
